What is the period of tension over possible atomic war between the soviet union and the united states following world war?

It was called the Cold War.  There was a lot of spying from both sides, and worry.  Many people believed that the world as we know it would come to an end when atomic weapons were unleashed, and that it was going to happen sooner or later.
