It is a distressing and disturbing experience in which the person experiences a feeling of strangeness about himself, a feeling of being separated, or outside the body itself. It coexists with derealization, consisting of an altered perception of the environment that produces a sense of unreality. The person experiencing the world as if it were strange, as if he were in a dream. In both there is an altered perception of reality, but while in depersonalization that sensation refers to the body itself, in derealization it is the environment that appears altered.
Affected patients have great difficulty describing these episodes and may believe they are going crazy. They can perceive some changes in the shape and size of objects and people may seem strange. An alteration in the subjective sensation of the passage of time may also appear. These experiences are not serious or dangerous, however, they can be disturbing and confusing, causing a concern and discomfort.
