A bag contains 8 black marbles, 16 white marbles, 14 red marbles, and 10 green marbles. A marble is drawn at random from the bag. What is the probability that the marble drawn will not be white?
A.1/3
B.2/3
C.3/4
D.15/16

Respuesta :

You can approach this question in multiple ways, 2 of which are more obvious.

Method 1). Add up the number of marbles which aren't white divide that by the total number of marbles.
I.e. 8 + 14 + 10 = 32
32/48 = 2/3
[There are 48 marbles in total]

Method 2). Find the total number of marbles, divide the number of white marbles by the total (like method 1), then do 1 minus the answer.
I.e. 16/48 = number of white marbles
1 - 16/48 = 2/3

The probability that the marble drawn will not be white is 2/3.

What is the probability that the marble drawn will not be white?

Probability determines the chances that an event would happen. The likelihood of the event occurring lies between 0 and 1. It is zero if the event does not occur and 1 if the event occurs.

Probability of not picking a white marble = total number of marbles that are not white / total number of marbles

  • Total number of marbles  = 8 + 16 + 14 + 10 = 48
  • Total number of marbles that are not white =8 + 14 + 10 = 32
  • Probability of not picking a white marble = 32 / 48 = 2/3
