Without looking, Santiago took a handful of multi-colored candies from a bag and found that 20% of the candies were yellow and 15% were green.

Suppose there were 480 candies in the bag.

Questions to answer:

Based on Santiago's results how many yellow candies would you expect there to be? Green candies?

And lastly, how many more yellow candies would you expect there to be than the green candies?

(1) We determine the number of yellow and green candies by multiplying the total number of the candies by the decimal equivalent of the given percentages. 
                   yellow:   n₁ = (480)(0.20) = 96 candies
                  green:    n₂ = (480)(0.15) = 72 candies

(2) We calculate what is asked of the second item by subtracting the number of green candies from the number of the yellow candies. 
                            n = 96 candies - 72 candies
                            n = 24 candies
