There are numerous goals but some of them include preventing inbreeding of horses to avoid genetic anomalies, while making sure that their population increases. Inbreeding can develop genetic disorders that would transfer to other horses in the future through generations of inbreeding and in the end you might end up with an entire new species, or with a dying race.
