The answer is actually Irus, who is another beggar. The suitors are cruel people, and in order to motivate the hungry duo into fighting, the suitors promise meals to the winner.
Answer: Irus
As Odysseus has been gone for so long, many men want to take Penelope, Odysseus's wife, as their own. Her house is full of suitors, when Odysseus enters. He is dressed as a beggar in order to remain hidden. However, another beggar, Irus (or Arnaeus) enters into the palace. He is brash, and challenges Odysseus to a fight. The suitors encourage this, and promise the winner a meal. Odysseus wins easily with the help of Athena.
