General Robert Lee intended to prove to the Confederate states of america that he had been their true leader, which is why he attacked federal troops in Pennsylvania.

He had utterly destroyed a Collective bargaining army in Virginia that was couple of times his strength. He needed to terminate the battle quickly as possible since he did not have enough men and knew the British army' vulnerability in Pennsylvania.
