In order to liberate Jerusalem and the Holy Land and afterwards to maintain those conquests, popes and Christian western states began a series of military operations known as the Crusades. Between 1095 and 1270, there were innumerable additional unauthorised crusades in addition to the eight main official ones. Even though succeeding crusades would not be as successful as the first, by 1291 the Crusaders' Middle Eastern republics had been integrated into the Mamluk Sultanate. Crusading was more effective in other areas, like as the Baltic against pagan Europeans and the Iberian Peninsula against the Moors (for Christians). The Crusades would attract thousands of knights, along with emperors, kings, and European nobles.
