As an example of a space traditionally not associated with rhetoric, many black feminist scholars feature the kitchen table as a metaphor for rhetoric in action.

According to the Black feminist theory, "Black women are naturally valued, and [Black women's] freedom is a requirement not as an auxiliary to somebody else's but because of our need as human individuals for autonomy." Discrimination based on race, gender, and class is a part of what bell hooks refers to as the "imperialist white supremacist, capitalist patriarchy." They work together to produce something more than just feeling racism and sexism separately because of their interdependence.

Therefore, it is necessary to use intersectionality to shed light on the experience of being a Black woman since it cannot be understood in terms of either being Black or being a woman.
