Deposits of salt on floor of occator crater was the famous, attention-grabbing feature when dawn studied ceres.

NASA's Dawn spacecraft was tasked with investigating the protoplanets in the asteroid belt. Vesta and Ceres were there. The first explored body was Vesta, which reached Ceres' orbit in 2016.

The greatest salt deposits ever discovered outside of the Earth were discovered in Ceres' occator crater. These substantial carbonate deposits, which were visible as a bright patch on Ceres' surface, were formed as a result of the salty water that was once present there evaporating. Dawn also came across a number of mineral deposits that the ocean's freezing left behind.
