Antony and Brutus both agrees that the Antony will speak second at the funeral and promises not to blame the conspirators.
As Brutus and Cassius attempt to explain what they just did to the other conspirators, the conspirators talk about the need to address the Roman populace. Cassius makes a comment on how their deed would go down in history. A message from Antony asking to see them if they will ensure his safety is delivered by the servant of Antony. After Brutus accepts, Antony arrives to greet them. Antony begs the plotters to allow him to die with Caesar. Informing him that he will have a position in the new government, Brutus declines to kill him. Antony requests permission to address the mourners. As long as Brutus gets to address the throng first, Cassius agrees despite his objections.
Privately, Antony begs Caesar's forgiveness for his friendship with the conspirators and confesses that his true intention is to incite a disturbance among the populace. In answer to Antony's invitation, Octavius is approaching Rome, according to a messenger from Octavius who has just arrived. Antony accepts his invitation to talk.
