in photosystem ii, p680 transfers an electron to pheophytin upon excitation by a photon. how is this electron replaced?

Respuesta :

The electron is replaced at the manganese centre of the oxygen-evolving complex by the splitting of water molecules.

Energy is transmitted inward from pigment to pigment until it reaches the reaction center when light is absorbed by one of the many pigments in photosystem II. A high energy electron is given off there and transported to P680. A water electron is used to replace the high-energy electron after it is delivered to an acceptor molecule. The oxygen we breathe is released by this splitting of water.
