Energy is transmitted inward from pigment to pigment until it reaches the reaction center when light is absorbed by one of the many pigments in photosystem II. A high energy electron is given off there and transported to P680. A water electron is used to replace the high-energy electron after it is delivered to an acceptor molecule. The oxygen we breathe is released by this splitting of water.
