An IDS is made to only send out alerts about potential incidents, allowing a security operations center (SOC) analyst to look at the situation and decide whether further action is necessary.

On the other hand, an IPS acts independently to stop the attempted incursion or otherwise address the issue. An IPS responds to cyberattacks in real-time with the aim of preventing them from accessing targeted systems and networks, whereas IDS are used to monitor networks and deliver alerts when suspicious activity on a system or network is discovered. A NIDS and an NIPS are equivalent and have no differences. A NIPS can respond to an assault more quickly by taking action.
