In Sept 1927, Mao led four regiments of the Red Army to the city of Changsha but he was defeated and forced to retreat with remnants of his army to thethe mountains.

In an effort to incite peasant uprisings throughout Hunan, Mao was made commander-in-chief of the Red Army and led four regiments against Changsha during the Autumn Harvest Uprising. Mao wrote "Changsha," the earliest poem of his to survive, just before the onslaught. On September 9, he had intended to attack the KMT-held city from three angles, but the Fourth Regiment turned against him and attacked the Third Regiment. Mao's army reached Changsha but was unable to capture it; on September 15, he admitted defeat and marched to Mountains with 1000 survivors.
