As a result of the breakdown of chlorophyll, the green color of the leaves turns orange or yellow. As the nights lengthen in the autumn, chlorophyll generation slows, then stops, and eventually all chlorophyll is destroyed. The leaf's carotenoids and anthocyanins are then unmasked and reveal their colors.
