During the agricultural revolution, the enclosure movement caused many former serfs to move to cities in search of work, which led to a rise in wages and the population of cities.
The enclosure movement was prominent in the 18th and 19th centuries in England ending the traditional rights on lands owned by communities or village members such as common grazing lands or agricultural lands. These lands were enclosed by fences for private uses and considered private property thereafter.
The English government and aristocracy justified enclosure as a means of better raising cattle and crops. The profit earned from the confiscation of lands directly benefitted the aristocracy. Due to the loss of grazing lands and farming lands, serfs left their native places and moved to cities for more employment opportunities. This further raised the population in cities.
