In the world of cryptography, a certificate revocation list (or CRL) is a "list of digital certificates that have been revoked by the issuing certificate authority (CA) before their scheduled expiration date and should no longer be believed.". The CA/Browser forum has decided to stop requiring CRLs because alternative certificate revocation protocols are now more frequently used. However, the CAs continue to make extensive use of CRLs. If a certificate is found to have been unlawfully granted by the certificate authority (CA) or if a private key is suspected of having been compromised, for instance, the certificate is irrevocably revoked. Additionally, certificates may be revoked if the recognised entity doesn't follow policy guidelines, such as publishing fake documents, misrepresenting software behaviour, or breaking any other rules.
