What I did with the information?
I was hired by a new firm to manage people and sales operations across multiple sectors, but I believe that getting your hands dirty is an important aspect of learning a company, its goods, services, and people. I believe in getting my hands dirty. One of the service lines sold by one of the industries was a deep toilet clean (in which acids and various other chemicals were used to strip a toilet to its natural state), so I went out on the road with a service person to see what the services looked like and what they included, and part of that time was spent doing what the service people did. I, too, did a poor job. The venomous comment (mentioned above) has stayed with me (more than a decade later!). That's what he told me right before he redid the toilet I'd tried to thoroughly clean. It's humiliating to fall at the first hurdle, especially when it comes to a service that many people reject or take for granted.
I suppose I could have gotten all huffy about it and done the whole "excuse me, I'm a MANAGER!" thing, but I didn't. Instead, I was astounded that the organization was so fortunate to have found someone so committed to a position that generally received little recognition. He wasn't employed to watch me; he was hired to deep clean bathrooms. he took that job incredibly seriously. That man was a gem. A decade on and I still recall and respect that level of work ethic. He’s still there, still doing his thing only he’s a supervisor now.If I ever get too big for my boots, I recall that I was once deemed ‘not good enough’ at cleaning toilets.
