On fretless Western instruments like the violin, where the microtones can be played, Byzantine modes can be performed. Despite having names from Ancient Greece, such as Lydian, Phrygian, etc., the Gregorian modes are unrelated to the music of the time. Similar to Byzantine chant and classical Arabic or Turkish music, ancient Greek music was likewise microtonal.
