It is true that the newsboys strike was widely considered a success for workers, while the homestead strike was considered a failure for workers.

On July 18, newsboys in Long Island City, Queens, caught the Evening Journal deliveryman selling them short bundles, sparking the now-famous New York newsboy strike of 1899. They nearly started a children's general strike when they overturned his wagon, pursued him up the street, and triumphantly hauled off armloads of papers.

Boys refused to sell the two newspapers with the highest circulation in the country—William Randolph Hearst's Evening Journal and Joseph Pulitzer's New York World—over the course of the following two weeks in all five boroughs and in villages and cities throughout the northeast. Their activities inspired messengers and bootblacks in neighboring places to strike and demand better conditions, as well as newsboys in distant cities like Cincinnati, Ohio, Lexington, Kentucky, and Nashville, Tennessee.
