A hydrometer is the name of the device used to determine the density of a liquid. One of the easiest scientific measuring instruments, you may even create your own out of a plastic straw (see links below). Though it frequently resembles a thermometer and is constructed of glass. A weighted bulb at the bottom helps it float upright, and it has a cylindrical stem. Until the hydrometer floats freely, the hydrometer is gently lowered into the liquid to be measured. For the user to see how high or low the hydrometer is floating, the instrument has lines that are engraved or marked. The hydrometer will float lower in less dense liquids, while floating higher in more dense liquids.
