The given statement is true, The mother church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Belleville is the Cathedral of Saint Peter, which is situated in Belleville, Illinois.

After Saint Barnabas the Apostle, the cathedral parish of Saint Peter was established in 1842 at a position to the east of the current building; it was rededicated to Saint Peter in 1847. The church realized they needed a bigger building by 1863. On the current site of the cathedral, was built a brick church that was dedicated in 1866. Around six o'clock on January 4, 1912, youngsters from the neighborhood discovered a fire in the building's upper floor. Even though they came promptly, firemen struggled to put out the fire because there wasn't enough water pressure to reach the 80 ft (24 m) roof and because it was a chilly 15 °F (9 °C). Officials from the water company attributed the low water pressure to a malfunctioning valve at the water station. The fire quickly ate through the roof timbers, causing them to fall and ignite other areas of the building. The bell tower and external walls were all that were left when the fire was put out. One local newspaper put the damage at $100,000 and stated that only $40,000 of the repairs would be covered by insurance.
