The Area Model is the model which is exceptionally good at modeling fraction multiplication. it works when partitioning is challenging and provides a visual of the size of the result.

Area Model:

In mathematics, an area model is a rectangular chart or model for multiplication and division problems, where the coefficients or quotients and divisors define the length and width of the rectangle. Numerical bindings can be used to divide a large rectangular area into several smaller boxes for easier calculations. Then add to get the total area which is the product or quotient.

To multiply two 2-digit numbers using the plane model:

For example, 27 as 20 and 7, 35 as 30 and 5.

  1. Draws a 2x2 grid, that is, a 2x2 box.
  2. Write one term of the multiplicand in the upper grid (box). One above each cell.
  3. Write other multiplicand terms on the left side of the grid. One on each cell side.
  4. Write the product of 10 in the first cell. Then write the product of 10 and 1 in the second and third cells. Write the product of 1 in the fourth cell.
  5. Finally, sum all the partial products to get the final product.
