The Harlem Race Riots of 1943 were riots that occurred in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan in August 1943.
It was detonated when a white police officer shot and killed an African-American soldier after he tried to intervene during a police arrest of an African-American woman for disturbing the peace.
White police officer James Collins shot and wounded Robert Bandy, an African-American soldier; and there were rumors that the soldier had been killed.
Nine whites and 25 African Americans were killed in the 1943 riots. No white individuals were killed by the police, while 17 African Americans died at the hands of police violence. Allegedly, 675 people were injured, and the damage amounted to two million dollars.
