Keith Haring had a fun way of working which reflected the content of his work. He often listened to hip-hop music whilst working and painted rhythmic lines to express the movement and energy, which is recognizable in so many of his works.
Keith Haring painted on vinyl tarpaulin, a material commonly found on the street and used as a performance surface by break dancers. Haring used his artistic platform to raise AIDS awareness.
In 1988, he was diagnosed with the disease. His poster Ignorance = Fear refers to the difficulties that people living with AIDS faced. He wished to reach as many people as possible and to emphasize the significance of AIDS education.
A year after his diagnosis, Haring established The Keith Haring Foundation to support AIDS research, charities, and education.
