Give a brief account on Barbary states.
From the 16th through the 19th centuries, the coastal areas of North Africa or the Maghreb—more specifically, the Ottoman frontiers, which included the regencies of Algiers and Tripoli, the Beylik of Tunis, and the Sultanate of Morocco—were known as the Barbary Coast. The name is derived from the Berbers' exonym.
Barbary wasn't always one cohesive political force. It was split up into the political units known as the Regency of Algiers, Tripolitania, Beylik of Tunis, and Sharifan Empire starting in the 16th century. The Dey of Algiers, the Pasha of Tripoli, the Bey of Tunis, and the Sultan of Morocco were important kings and minor monarchs during the period of the marauding expeditions of the Barbary States.
The United States fought a war with the Barbary States and, most notably, the Barbary pirates in the early 1800s. The Ottoman Empire's Berber nations of North Africa, which are today Tunisia, Algeria, and Libya, and the United States of America engaged in battle during the Barbary Wars. This conflict started because the Berber governments encouraged piracy in the Mediterranean Sea, which seriously harmed American commercial interests there by leading to the hijacking of numerous American ships.
