What are the styles of poor listening?
There are various ways we can listen to others which are not helpful to effective communication such as styles of poor listening which impede effective communication. Those styles of poor listening are:
- The Fake Listener, who is not really listening, they are acting as if they are listening. The Faker does this to fool the talker into believing they have the full attention of the talker. While pretending to be listening they are thinking about something else or are so intent of a listener that they do not hear what is being said.
- The Dependent Listener, who is a speaker pleaser. They are so worried about impressing the speaker that they are not listening and cannot respond appropriately, and may agree excessively with what the speaker says.
- The Interrupter, who will not allow others to finish their thoughts. Perhaps fearing that they will forget something important they want to say, or feeling that it is necessary to respond to a point as soon as it is made. Interrupters leave no opportunity for another to talk out their feelings.
- The Self-Conscious Listener, who are concerned primarily with their own status in the eyes of the other rather than with the ideas and feelings of the other. They are trying to impress the other person and not listen with understanding.
