The Mau Mau insurrection (1952–1960), often referred to as the Mau Mau uprising, Mau Mau revolt, or Kenya Emergency, was a conflict between the Kenya Land and Freedom Army (KLFA), commonly known as the Mau Mau, and British authorities that took place in the British Kenya Colony (1920–1963). Officially, 11,000 Mau Mau and other insurgents were murdered, including 1,090 prisoners who were executed by hanging by the British government. During the eight years of the emergency, just 32 white settlers were killed. Unofficial statistics, however, indicate that a substantially higher number of people were killed during the counter-insurgency campaign. The revolution was sparked by problems like as the eviction of Kikuyu tenants from settler farms, the loss of land to white settlers, poverty, and the absence of real political representation for Africans. 32 white settlers and over 200 British police and troops died during the eight-year insurrection.
