Mitochondria are necessary for the generation of ATP, which supplies cells with energy. The rapid, involuntary contraction and relaxation of the heart muscle are vital to pumping blood throughout the cardiovascular system. To achieve this, the structure of the heart muscle has distinct characteristics that allow it to contract in a coordinated manner and resist fatigue. This is mainly because the heart is made of cardiac muscle, which consists of special cells called cardiomyocytes. Unlike other muscle cells in the body, cardiomyocytes are highly resistant to fatigue.
