Polish Americans came to the United States in three "waves," the greatest of which occurred between 1870 and 1914, the second following World War II, and the third following Poland's independence in 1989.
The majority of Polish Americans are descendants of those who left Poland's Polish neighborhoods in Germany, Russia, and Austria during the first wave. Because the majority were Polish peasants who needed basic sustenance and did not own property, this group is sometimes referred to as the za chlebem (for bread) immigrants. Galicia was unquestionably the most impoverished region of Europe at the time, and Austrian Poles came from there. After a few years, up to one-third of Poles in America went back to their own country, but the majority stayed.
