Character  C.Atkinson appears in W. F. Harvey's 1910 short story "August Heat." Mr. Atkinson, a respectable and attractive bricklayer  meets James Clarence, an artist who sketched a criminal who remarkably look like Mr. Atkinson, is introduced to us in this story.

On his evening stroll, Withencroft arrives onto Charles Atkinson's stone mason store. He is shocked to see that Atkinson looks just like the suspect on the sketch he is carrying. Both men are astonished to see that Withencroft's entire name, birth date, and death date are all listed on the model headstone Atkinson has just finished carving.

Uneasy, the two men decide that Withencroft should remain at Atkinson's house until midnight has gone and the date has changed. The tale concludes with foreshadowing of the narrator's death.
