In order to build a beloved community, King saw nonviolent direct action as a way for protesters to use their bodies as an appeal to the conscience of the larger community. King's rhetoric served as a narration and monologue alongside the theatre of protest, heightening the tension between the oppressed and the oppressor. He was adamant that his nonviolence represented a militant commitment to change rather than passivity or mollification.
The four basic steps in any nonviolent campaign are as follows:
1) gathering information to ascertain whether injustices still exist
2) bargaining
3) self-purification
4) taking direct action
We who take part in nonviolent direct action do not cause conflict. We merely bring the tension that is already present and hidden to the surface. We expose it so that it can be seen and dealt with in the open. Injustice must similarly be exposed, with all the tension its exposure creates, to the light of human conscience and the air of national opinion before it can be cured, just as a boil that is covered up cannot be cured as long as it is left unopened to the natural medicines of air and light.
