Julia Alvarez's parents left New York City where she was born in 1950 and went back to the Dominican Republic soon after. Her father's participation in a plot to topple the dictator Trujillo ten years later prompted the family to leave to the United States. Alvarez has authored a number of books for young readers, including the Tia Lola Stories series, Before We Were Free, finding miracles, Return to Sender, and Where Do They Go? She has also written novels (How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, In the Time of the Butterflies. The Pura Belpre, Americas, Hispanic Heritage, and F. Scott Fitzgerald Awards have all been given to Alvarez for her works written for young readers.
