On March 14, 2018, thousands of students across the nation walked out of their classrooms for 17
minutes to honor the 17 students killed a month previously in Parkland, Florida, and to demonstrate
support for stronger gun control laws. Many schools were supportive, but schools in Kansas and
Pennsylvania gave students detention or suspended them for leaving the school building without
permission. Is punishing students for walking out an appropriate limit on free speech?
