The Spanish invaders captured the Inca Emperor, and despite efforts to win his release, they had him executed.
Pizarro kept Atahualpa in captivity while he devised a plan to conquer his empire after realizing the monarch was initially worth more alive than dead. Atahualpa responded by appealing to his captors' greed by promising them his freedom in exchange for a room full of gold and silver.
Atahualpa made a substantial ransom demand of 24 tons of gold and silver in an effort to gain his release. The Spanish accepted gratefully but nevertheless executed the emperor. At this point, Spain effectively controlled the empire.
