The liver is derived from the mesoderm and endoderm and receive its arterial blood supply from the hepatic artery.

Endoderm and mesoderm germ layers give rise to the liver. There are two sources of blood flow for the liver. The hepatic artery, which transports oxygenated blood from the systemic circulation, is the first. The second is the hepatic portal vein, which transports nutrient-rich, deoxygenated blood from the small intestine. Numerous metabolic processes take place in the hepatic cells where the blood travels through the liver tissue. The hepatic vein is the vein that carries blood out from the liver.
