Okonkwo:
The tragic hero of Things Fall Apart is a prominent, haughty, ambitious, and ill-tempered clan chief in Umuofia. An ambitious individual who has climbed from obscurity to prominence in his tribe. Okonkwo's humiliation by his lazy, wasting, and effeminate father, Unoka, has spurred him to excel in boyhood. Okonkwo's hard work and wrestling prowess against Amalinze the cat have earned him a position of high status in his clan, and he has amassed enough wealth to support his three wives and their children. Okonkwo wields an iron fist over his family. He is deeply committed to his people's traditions and social hierarchies, and he is determined that his sons and daughters follow in his demanding footsteps.
Unoka:
Okonkwo's father, whom he has been embarrassed by since boyhood. He died when Okonkwo was still a child, and he was a failure. Unoka was a coward and a spendthrift by clan norms. He never had a title, borrowed money from his clansmen, and seldom repaid his obligations. He never became a warrior because he was afraid of blood. Furthermore, he died as a result of a heinous sickness. Unoka died in debt and shame. Okonkwo's fear of failure was fueled by his memory, and he worked tirelessly as a result.
