What are monophyletic group?

A group consisting of a collection of organisms including the most recent common ancestor of all those organisms and all the descendants.  It is identified by the presence of shared and unique characters . Every phylogenetic tree has as many monophyletic groups as there are ancestors.

Example of a monophyletic group is one that is comprised of humans, apes, and new world monkeys because they share the most common recent ancestral group which is old-world monkeys.                      

Amphibia, ray-finned fish and hagfishes are monophyletic group whereas sharks are not monophyletic.
