The incisive nerve is one of the two terminal branches of the inferior alveolar nerve, which is a branch of the trigeminal nerve's posterior mandibular division. It runs anteriorly in the mandibular incisive canal, which is a continuation of the mandibular canal, after the mental nerve divides off to leave through the mental foramen. It provides the mandibular canine, incisor, and buccal gingiva with nutrients.
A branch of the mandibular nerve is the inferior alveolar nerve. The inferior alveolar nerve leaves the mandibular nerve and passes behind the lateral pterygoid muscle. The mylohyoid nerve, which it releases, then enters the mandibular foramen.
It provides the lower teeth (molars and second premolars) with sensory branches that develop into the inferior dental plexus and release tiny gingival and dental nerves to the teeth when it is in the mandibular canal within the jaw.
Approximately around the level of the mandibular second premolars, the nerve gives off the mental nerve, which leaves the jaw through the mental foramen and provides sensory branches to the chin and lower lip.
