The role of parents play in Erikson's 5th stage of development of identity vs role confusion is that parents can help the children to move past the psychological barriers.

Like Sigmund Freud, Erikson believed that personality development happens in stages. He focused on psychosocial development rather than the psychosexual development concept of Freud.

Erikson divided personality development into eight stages that are, trust vs mistrust, autonomy vs shame/doubt, initiative vs guilt, industry vs inferiority, identity vs confusion, intimacy vs isolation, generativity vs stagnation, and integrity vs despair.

5th stage of development of personality is identity vs role confusion occurring at the age of 12-18 years. Adolescents start taking their personal and social identities seriously. It leads to the evaluation of beliefs, goals, and values of their own and their families as well.

Erikson suggests that the identities involved at this stage are sexual and occupational. Adapting to changes in the body will reflect in their ability to adapt to changes. Parents can learn and understand the significance of this stage. It will help them to guide their children which will further reduce the confusion between the identity and beliefs of the children.
