The Great Hunger, often known as the Irish Potato Famine, started in 1845 when a mold called Phytophthora infestans (or P. infestans) created a catastrophic plant disease that spread quickly throughout Ireland. Ireland, which was then administered as a colony of Great Britain, was severely affected by the infestation since tenant farmers there relied primarily on the potato as a food supply.
A million Irish people died as a result of famine and other connected causes before the Potato Famine came to an end in 1852, and another million were compelled to flee their country as refugees.
