Imagine reading about Steve, a subject in a mid-century experiment where he was required to compare a standard line to three comparison lines. The researcher was Solomon Asch.

Solomon Asch was who?

Solomon Asch was a pioneer of social psychology and a Polish-American psychologist with a focus on gestalt theory. He did ground-breaking studies on a variety of subjects, such as how perceptions of others are formed and how status may affect conclusions. Asch is most recognized for his research on compliance and group pressure.

He participated in Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study for two years (1958–1960) while attending Swarthmore. There, he employed Stanley Milgram as his research assistant. Milgram would go on to become a well-known psychologist. Asch also carried out his well-known conformity experiment investigations while he was a student at Swarthmore.
