Amphibians are those organisms which live both on the land and in the water. Bryophytes although grow on soil but need water for sexual reproduction.

The sperms of the bryophytes are flagellated and eggs are non-motile. Each sperm accounts two flagella. So, in order to accomplish fertilization sperm must be provided with the water. So that sperm can easily whip its flagella in water and swim to egg to fertilize it.
