Following his admission that he denied the Holocaust, British revisionist historian and Nazi apologist David Irving was today given a three-year prison term.A few hours into its deliberations on the first day of Irving's trial, an eight-member jury in a court in Vienna found the 68-year-old man guilty.
The remarks made assertions that Adolf Hitler had aided Europe's Jews and that the Holocaust was a fiction, as well as a demand for an end to the "gas chambers fairy tale."
Irving testified in court today that he had changed his mind after viewing Adolf Eichmann's personal papers. He informed the court in German that he now acknowledged that the Nazis had murdered millions of Jews.
He once wept during his testimony for "all the innocent victims" who perished in the conflict. He admitted, "I was wrong when I declared there were no gas chambers at Auschwitz.
Irving could have spent up to 10 years in prison for rejecting the Holocaust under Austria's strictest regulations in the world.
