As Danielle, the fourth named storm of the year, developed on Friday and Earl, the fifth named system of the year, emerged, breaking a historically calm period over the basin.
On September 2, AccuWeather meteorologists released an update to the seasonal prediction outlining their expectations for the roughly three months until the hurricane season officially ends on Nov. 30. When the season is all said and done, they expect there to be 12 to 16 named tropical systems in the Atlantic hurricane basin, including five to seven hurricanes, two or three of which could become major hurricanes (Category 3 storms with winds of 111 mph or more), three or four direct impacts to the United States, and a total of 12 to 16 named tropical systems.
