The generation of middle-aged people who are supposedly squeezed by the needs of younger and older family members is known as the sandwich generation.
The majority of the middle-aged population in the age group 40 to 50, have a parent aged 65 or older and is also raising a young child or financially supporting a child over the age of 18.
They have to provide not only financially for their parents and children but also care for them emotionally. This gives them little or no independence, and causes them to get sandwiched between their parents and their children, hence the term, 'sandwich generation.'
