One of the most significant French art collectors of the early 20th century was Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, a German-born art trader, publisher, and historian. He first gained notoriety with his Parisian art gallery during the rise of Cubism , and he was one of the first to advocate for the movement's creators, Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) and Georges Braque. Members of the Ecole de Paris, such as Andre Derain B, Maurice de Vlaminck (1876–1958), Kees van Dongen (1877– 1968), and Alberto Giacometti (1901–66), as well as the other two major Cubist painters, the Spanish painter Juan Gris (1887–1927) and the French artist Fernand Leger, were among the other painters and sculptors he supported.
