The more air inside the swim bladder, the more buoyant the fish, and the less air in the swim bladder, the less of the buoyant the fish. the Swim bladders inflate and then deflate as much as like human lungs. The buoyancy of the swim bladder makes it easier to stay in water at a certain depth.
