Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is the term for a group of disorders caused when the immune system misidentified red blood cells as foreign and creates bodies that attacked them.

It is an uncommon immunological condition. It takes place when your body destroys red blood cells because it thinks they are foreign objects. Medication, surgery, and occasionally a blood transfusion are used as treatments. Although very treatable, AIHA can be lethal if mistreated.

Warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia and cold autoimmune hemolytic anemia are the two main subtypes of this condition. The type of antibodies that are implicated in the disease determines this classification.

Primary AIHA is defined as AIHA that develops without a clear indication of an underlying disease.

A secondary AIHA is one that is connected to another condition, such as a viral illness, other autoimmune illnesses, medicine, or underlying blood malignancy such as lymphoma.
