Roger Williams (1603-83) was a theologian and Puritan minister whose abolitionists and separatists ideas were highly rejected by the leaders of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and which lead him to his banishment from the colony. After the exile, he and his followers ended up settling on Narragansett Bay where they bought Rhode Island and founded it on the principles of religious liberty, separation of church and state, and of fair dealings with American Indians.
